Job Title: Group Health and Safety Manager
Grade: H
Responsible to: Personnel Director
Location: Head Office
 
Job Purpose:
To monitor safety and ensure management and employees have the knowledge and tools necessary to carry out their legal Health and Safety responsibilities. Advise, support and facilitate at all levels of the business from the executive to store management.
 
Job Context:
The role will be based at head office, but will cover all operations throughout the UK and Ireland. A significant portion of the role will be spent in the field, dealing with the client base and advisory bodies.
 
Principle Accountabilities
- Ensure that the Health and Safety policy is updated in response to changes to legislation and within the organisation.
- Advise on all statutory safety regulations and associated requirements affecting operations.
- Recommend working procedures and training programmes to promote good safety awareness.
- Comment on proposed new and revised equipment or procedures.
- Report regularly to the personnel director on safety matters, taking immediate action where there is imminent risk to personnel.
- Comment on safety performance, giving advice and recommendations where necessary.
- Ensure that health surveillance programmes are developed, implemented and monitored to comply with the requirements of specific regulations and legislation.
- Ensure there is adequate provision of occupational health and welfare services throughout the company.
- Line management responsibility for the occupational health and safety advisor.
- Represent the company to external enforcement authorities, ensuring identified actions are taken and monitored.
- Prepare adequate information and communication for counsel and solicitors in any legal action concerning health and safety issues.
- Advise line management on the investigation of accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences, and the measures to be taken to prevent reoccurrence.
- Ensure compliance with the incident and accident reporting legislation.
- Promote safety and occupational health issues as a major consideration in all forward planning.
 
Person Specification
- 2-5 yrs minimum in a Health and Safety role.
- In depth knowledge of legislation.
- Experience of a multi-site business (preferably retail) and the ability to manage the associated logistical issues§ A relevant qualification would be desirable (e.g. NEBOSH diploma or NVQ Level 4).
- Pace / delivery focus coupled with a pragmatic approach.

- Excellent communication skills.
- Persuasive and able to influence at a senior level.
